Anderson localization as position-dependent diffusion in disordered waveguides

چکیده
We show that the recently developed self-consistent theory of Anderson localization with a positiondependent diffusion coefficient is in quantitative agreement with the supersymmetry approach up to terms of the order of 1 /g0 2 with g0 the dimensionless conductance in the absence of interference effects and with large-scale ab initio simulations of the classical wave transport in disordered waveguides, at least for g0 0.5. In the latter case, agreement is found even in the presence of absorption. Our numerical results confirm that in open disordered media, the onset of Anderson localization can be viewed as position-dependent diffusion.

Microscopic derivation of self-consistent equations of Anderson localization in a disordered medium of finite size.
We present a microscopic derivation of self-consistent equations of Anderson localization in a disordered medium of finite size. The derivation leads to a renormalized, position-dependent diffusion coefficient. The position dependence of the latter is due to the position dependence of return probability in a bounded medium.
متن کاملEffect of evanescent channels on position-dependent diffusion in disordered waveguides
Wave interference leads to deviations from the diffusive description of wave propagation through a random medium. This is a manifestation of an onset of Anderson localization – a paradigm in mesoscopic physics [1–3]. Self-consistent theory (SCT) of localization [4,5] accounts for the wave interference effects by renormalizing (reducing) the diffusion coefficient. In an experiment, one deals wit...
متن کاملInterplay between localization and absorption in disordered waveguides.
This work presents results of ab-initio simulations of continuous wave transport in disordered absorbing waveguides. Wave interference effects cause deviations from diffusive picture of wave transport and make the diffusion coefficient position- and absorption-dependent. As a consequence, the true limit of a zero diffusion coefficient is never reached in an absorbing random medium of infinite s...
متن کاملNumerical study of Anderson localization of terahertz waves in disordered waveguides
We present a numerical study of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered quasi– one-dimensional waveguides at terahertz frequencies. Finite element method calculations of terahertz wave propagation within LiNbO3 waveguides with randomly arranged air-filled circular scatterers exhibit an onset of Anderson localization at experimentally accessible length scales. Results for the average transm...
متن کاملApplicability of the position-dependent diffusion approach to localized transport through disordered waveguides
The diffusive description of wave transport in random media has a long history [1]. This macroscopic approach describes the ensemble-averaged intensity of the wave on scales longer than the transport mean free path . As such, the diffusive description has a practical advantage compared to the direct solution of the wave equation for each statistical realization of disorder and subsequent averag...
